Juneteenth (short for "June Nineteenth") is a U.S. holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. Specifically, it marks June 19, 1865, the day when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced freedom for enslaved people—more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863.
